The art form of Anime in and of itself is what's causing the confusion. The Anime artists intentionally put ambiguous features on the characters so that you see who you want to see in it.
My blood pressure goes up every time someone says this. It is both (1) objectively untrue, and (2) irrelevant, because Avatar's not a Japanese show! Also, I resent the capitalization there.
And I don't really get why people keep saying this to begin with. I thought that "well, Japan is racist, too!" was one of the standard-issue tactics for derailing discussions of white racism. I mean... is it getting retired now? Will there be a ceremony held for it in the ONTD comments section? And the io9 comments send over a representative with a gold watch?
