It's funny, I guess even though R&B is considered mainstream at this point, it still sits in my head as anything but- there was only 2 stations that would play any. Just the same, the folks who'd play NKOTB rarely were the same ones playing Boys 2 Men.
IME basically *everyone* was playing Boys2Men. I even... okay this is king of nerdity but I once tried impressing some girls (when I was like, what, 10?) playing the chorus of "Water Run Dry" on the violin. That didn't really work. Though it was funny.
Sure there was the B2M fad, but look at it now- how many stations will still bust out some (white) boybands vs. B2M, Jodeci, or New Edition? I've generally found the crossover phase for any hot group/band ends after a few years and stations go back to segregating music. (see also: the everlasting play of Beastie Boys vs. the 2 year Talib/Mos Def run on your local alternate station)
