A few years back, I was reading a bit on early Chinese immigrants to America. Whatever book it was, it covered pretty general surface level stuff, and once in a while, would bust out with horrifying facts like over 100,000 pounds of bones being shipped back to China for burial in a single year.

You know. Without any real context statements other than, "Most Chinese wanted to be laid to rest in their homeland."

Bones aren't that heavy.

And, I'm thinking of all the people who died in explosions trying to dig tunnels for trains, whose bones probably weren't all intact.

My remyth of it is this: 1800's California, just as the Gold Rush is starting to die down, and Chinese are good for shit work- mining, farming, laying track... and exorcising ghosts.

Who wants to deal with the angry spirits of a land being torn apart, dug up, and millions of ghosts of genocide?

Let the heathen orientals deal with it. After all, they don't believe in the Good Lord anyway.

(This idea's been floating in my head as an idea for an rpg. Gold Rush chinese ghostbusters.)

Thanks for this. Been long curious/fascinated/freaked out with ghosts and its relation to me/my family/Viet folks.

I tried to post something re: your remyth project on my journal, don't know if it's what you were shooting for or if I should post it here or there, but I tried.

Yeah, just go here:

Comment and leave the link.

Also- yeah, I think it's really interesting the way ghosts tie to generational breaks.

Story idea: Grandparent, last 1st generation person, only one who speaks the language fluently, alone in a room- the only one who can speak to the ghosts of the last generation, while the kids are busy playing PS2 in the other room.

God, the idea creeps me out.
