If the accused did not retort by violent attack, either right on the spot or by demanding holmgang, yielding either the challenging accuser to take his words back or the accuser's death, he was hence proven to be a weak and cowardly nithing by not retorting accordingly

And then you gonna turn around and act "ZOMG they're going to show up and hurt me?"

Really?

Don't call up old traditions you don't want to be a part of.

ETA: That should not be taken as a threat, but rather WTF would you say that and then act like you're the victim?

I was looking up stuff on Confucianism for a game I'm working on, and found a wiki link for "Homosexuality & Confucianism" ("Biting the Bitter Peel"... um wow) and realized there was a whole set of links for "Homosexuality and religions" etc. which got me there.

Also interesting "Angry" originally meaning "Unmasculine" and here we are, and anger = maleness all around...

Having taken a class in Old English Anglo Saxon Literature, as well as Comp Lit classes up the wazoo in grad school I have always known what it means to be called nithing. Anyway, those are my people, and even when I was growing up, they, over in this landia too, were excellent at making family and community members understand what nithings you were, if they so chose to do so.

Also I've witnessed disquisitions by some of those connected one way and another to those who employed that word, about that word, one of whom is a Ph.D. in Old English. They know very well.
