I'm going to quote myself on something folks need to learn:

"Anyone whose sole or primary 'connection' with women of color (or any other oppressed group) is through blogging (or books, or museums, or music, etc.) is very far from being in a place to talk about "learning" or "growing" from a group of people whom they have chosen not to associate."

If you want to know about folks, but you won't hang out with them? If your circles seem to "lack" said folks despite a larger demographic? Odds are you're working really hard to not be around people.

It's like yoga without Indians, kung fu without Chinese, jazz without Black folks, and on and on. When you want what we have for your benefit but you don't want us around?

Don't think we don't know what that is:

That's appropriation.

And odds are, until you manage to dislodge yourself from the center of the fucking universe, even if you want us around, we sure as hell don't want you.

and they'd have to try REALLY REALLY HARD, because I am exceptionally asocial, have a VERY small circle of friends, and live in wisconsin, and I still somehow have friends that are PoC without having to have gone out and collected them like pokemon cards.

I knew someone who lived in downtown Oakland and I was their only friend of color... and they moved from Hawaii.

It's boggling at the level of denial and effort that folks put themselves through.

Ah, what a better place for white folks to talk about the horrors of colonization, right?

I met people like that in Shanghai and Taiwan. It was kind of ridiculous.

Wherein we're supposed to all be happy and sing kumbahyah no matter how much suffering occurs because a white woman got the opportunity to "grow" and "learn". (http://www.womanist-musings.com/2009/02/blogging-and-conversations.html)

Something wiggy is going on with her site since this morning.

Basically, random person goes around defending going "Oh, but look at all we learned!" and people bring up how narcissistic and straight up privileged that is to throw around (much like a Michael Richards/Dog the Bounty Hunter "I know better NOW") and she goes, "But it's not my fault, all this NEW information is scattered across blogs"

...

Which, basically brings up my quote.
