Blue is jobs gained, which dominates the first 1/2 of the timeline, then the red circles of jobs lost takes over.

And notice the source of the data. I, for example, dropped off the unemployment rolls well over a year ago and don't count.
So that map is the cleaned up and pretty stats and it is still sick.
Poor, poor Michigan.

Yeah, I've been watching friends who are contractors and temps battle it out for the last 2 years, I suspect that the blue at the beginning is a total above those lost- which isn't to say that the new jobs were at all equal to the ones lost- I mean, campaigning for the elections probably resulted in a lot of jobs, but all short term and not very well paid for 2007-2008.
